Well my plan was to purchase a Ford Explorer from a dealer but before I purchase the vehicle I would have them do the inspection with that form which is need to purchase the Ford Warranty before purchasing the vehicle.

I contact to the FordWarrantys.com about the inspection and they said that they will arrange the inspection after the vehicle purchase. I thought you could have an ASE Mechanic do this and you can fax or email them the complete form with the contract.

I don't want to purchase a vehicle just to have it failed so I can't get a Extended Warranty.

I would tell them that the contract is contingent upon satisfactory inspection and approval of warranty availability for this vehicle.

Dazzle them with large words... :D

Seriously though- it has to be contingent or don't buy it. Ex's are everywhere to be had...

It seems things have changed since I purchased my warranty a year ago. Here's the new requirement on the ford warrantys site:

Vehicle Inspection Procedure

A vehicle inspection is required for the purchase of Used Ford ESP coverage.
The inspection will be performed by Centro Inspection Agency.
The fee to you for this inspection is $125.00 non-refundable, whether or not you complete the purchase of coverage.
A representative from Centro will contact you by telephone to schedule the inspection.
Normally, you will be contacted within 4 business days from the receipt of your application.
Fordwarrantys.com will collect the $125.00 fee through a separate charge to your credit card and then make the payment to Centro.
Once the inspection appointment has been scheduled the $125.00 fee is non-refundable.

None of this was required from me in 2009 when I bought my warranty. I paid my ASE mechanic $30 to inspect my truck and fill out the inspection form.

I think Joe Dirt presents a good option worth trying.
Another alternative is to contact your local Ford dealer and find out their prerequisites. Keep in mind that fordwarrantys.com is Lombard Ford's site (I think they're in New Jersey). They do the most volume for the warranties and may have the best rates nationally. But you can buy from any Ford dealership. Good luck.

I just re-read the fordwarrantys site. Althought the requirements have changed, there's no language that says you have to purchase the vehicle BEFORE it is inspected.

So theoretically, if you find an explorer you like, you could place a refundable deposit on it to hold the vehicle while you request an inspection. Assuming the dealer agrees to this arrangement.

Then, if/when it passes and you're approved for warranty coverage, you can complete the sale of the truck with your dealer.

Thanks Joe Dirt and MainSource. I found this site which also does ford extended warranty: http://www.troy-ford-extended-warranty.com/

I am not sure if their prices are as good as the fordwarrantys.com prices but you can take the inspection to your own mechanic to get it inspected. I am going to to check them out to see what others say about them.

I found a 2004 Ford Explorer Limited with 82,000 miles, they want $13,500. I am hoping to at least try to get them down to $12k or $12,500. Everyone on this forum knows more about Xs than me....do you think my offer will be reasonable..i dont want to make an offer that is insulting...i really don't think this is worth 13,500...

I will have to run either an AutoCheck or CarFax...most people say Autocheck is better and more accurate....

I'd start the offering at $10k. They probably paid $7-$8k for the truck on trade, or $5-$6k at auction. You can always go up, you can never go down...

Get a mechanic to do a thorough mechanical inspection. Pop the oil fill cap, and also consider popping the valve covers (offer to pay for the gaskets although they should be ok if still pliable and rubbery). Check oil level on the dipstick and smell it. Ask to see mechanical records if at all possible.

If all is ok, and you want the vehicle after that, then make an offer of 10K to start topping out at about 12,000 if you really want it. 13,500 plus tax, is going to bring you up to almost 15K for the truck. Its actually 1 yr newer than mine, but also has 10K more miles, so that sort of evens out the values.

OT, I know of an 04 Limited with a V8 for 10K near me. I saw it up on ebay. It was pretty much the twin of mine. No one placed any bids even at 10 and it had 40-50K on it I think.
