I have a 1999 Explorer XLT with the 4.0 SOHC. The 4 wheel drive switch is Auto/High/low. I understand from doing some searching, that the front axle is running all the time and only gets power when a slip is sensed. I would like to put some free wheeling hubs on the front to help with the mileage and quiet the cab down. If they are available, where can I get them and which brands work the best. Thanks for your help in advance.

I am sure some has done this or wanted to do this before. I just need a few minutes of your time to make sure I go in the right direction.

There's nothing like that available. Your only possible option is converting some of your front axle using Ranger parts, but I think it only works for certain years.
Did you do a search on it?

Thanks for responding. I have done some searching but for me at least, it seems to take hours trying to sort the information out. I was hoping that someone with the same vehicle would just say I did that and here is what I did. If it cannot be done then I will live with it.

AVM hubs 99 ranger halfshafts hub bearings and a set of seals and clips , search for AVM hub conversion there are a few of us on here that have done it
