Doing the front brakes on my X for the first time with this suv. Any tips or hints... maybe a step by step.. Can I just unbolt the top caliper bolt (Pin) and open like a clam shell or should I take whole caliper off.

Thanks

Don't let the caliper hang by the hose. Use a hook or a stretch cord on the caliper. Grease the slide pins, and use an anti squeal cream on the back of the brake pads. Monitor the fluid level in the master cylinder. Make sure that you have a caliper piston tool to compress the caliper before you start the job.

Search around here, there are several "how to" posted.

I just did all 4 brakes.... the bottom guide pins on front left and right were seized... something tells me the previous owner did the top bolt swing method and let the pins freeze up from not ever re-greasing the pins.... there is always going to be bad things when you try to save time... you cant buy the pins alone and they come in packs of 2... the boot seal comes in another kit that includes 4 boots, pad shim hardware and 4 caliper bolts... just needing one pin and one boot cost me $17 bucks and a ton of parts for my collection for the future...

^ Agree. Remove BOTH pins on each caliper and check for corrosion. Avoid getting brake cleaner on rubber parts to prevent swelling. Also important to use specific high temp silicone brake lube on the pins and all caliper hardware. Do not use regular chassis grease or anti seize or they will be guaranteed to bind and stick. Pin pics below caused a sticking caliper and other damage from overheating.
