I’ve read through a number of threads trying to match my problem. One thing that’s clear is more info is better- so there’s maybe too much detail below.

When I hit bumps, turn slowly, decal/accel, there is an occasional low-pitch "squeak"; it almost sounds like a shock that’s not sliding smoothly. It makes a chun-chun-chun-chun (four or so main "pulses" in maybe one second). The problem is, it doesn’t happen all the time. In fact, it seems to occur when there is a large temperature change in the seasons (but not conclusive). Also, many years back, I had the transfer case motor replaced as a warranty/recall item, but had just moved from Maine (where we used 4x4 a lot) to Florida (never used), so I don't no if there was a problem after the case was worked on. A service station told my wife it was the tie rods making the noise, and it would fail Virginia inspection. It is NOT the tie rods- they are fine- no play, good shape, etc. All the boots are fine.

I mention the transfer case because now when I try to engage four wheel high, it engages OK, but there is a pronounced rough grinding/dragging from both front tires; turns are awful! When I disengage, the retraction seems to hang up, then let loose with a pretty good “thunk.†Since I don’t need 4x4 anymore, I’m almost afraid to try engage it for fear of trashing the whole transmission.
Since the noise is so rare, it is hard to pin down, but it is obvious something is wrong. A motor head friend suggests possibly the CV joints, which may agrrevate the transfer case issue. Is there a common problem this description matches?
