Hey Everyone! I am new to the forums and to my 98 Explorer XLT 4x4. I am hoping that someone can help me -- my truck makes a very distinct clicking noise whenever I am driving under 10 mph and turning to either direction. The sound seems to be coming from inside the front wheels, almost like something is catching in the wheel over and over. It is very much like the sound a front wheel drive car makes when it needs new CV joints. Has anyone had this problem, or know of what it could be? Thanks for any help. You can reply here, or at my email skim61@msn.com.

It could be your wheel bearings, but more than likely your CV joints are on their way out.

I ahd my bearing replaced a few months ago, but only 2 months ago I aws getting a similar noise. Going slow and turning certain ways. My Explorer went to eh dealer for unrelated issues and they were told about that. What came back on teh report was that there was some items that got in the way of the tire during turning, so it was a par tof hte wheel well, or fender assembly, not bearings, so check this sitution yourself frist, before you spend $$.

Thanks - Here's More Information

Thanks for your replies. I haven't had time to pull off the tire, but I did look at it with tires turned in both directions. I did not see anything that would be rubbing. Also, moving extremely slowly, I noticed the click happened only once per wheel revolution. Would this help a diagnosis? I am not only new to the Explorer, but new to 4x4 as well, thanks for letting me know that I do have CV joints. I guess there's alot more for me to learn.
