Frustrated!!!

My 1992 Ford Explorer 4x4 has been making a noise that I can't figure out. But I'm thinking that it might be the automatic tranny. If there is a tranny problem, will the onboard computer generate a code for it and light up the Check engine light?

Most likely no...

On the manual transmission I don't think the ECM is talking to the trans at all..

On the a4ld it can tell if the TCC (torque converter cluch) and 3/4 shift solenoids are outside their normal impedance (IIRC, its 26ohms - 40 ohms).

Other than that, the ECM on the 1991 (EEC-IV system) doesn't know much about the transmission.
