I'm looking for some ideas on how to improve the fuel economy for my 2005 XLS 4.0L V6 with auto 4WD while keeping or enhancing the overall performance of the vehicle and avoiding wearing parts out faster. I also want to be able to pass NYS inspection.

I know that the Explorer is not the vehicle for someone concerned with fuel economy, but I needed the room for various computer repair tools and parts.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

intake, exhaust, tune, eleteric fan, UDP, remove any excess weight, check tire pressure and adjust accordingly. Those should add some mpg/hp. Simple tune up to restore any lost power, and maybe some seafoam. Im sure with all or some of those you will notice a nice increase.

Do a google search for "xtreme 4x4 fuel savings street truck". I'd provide a link, but my work firewall blocks that site for "bandwidth" reasons.

Basically, they took a '96 Dodge 1500 (I think...) that was lifted and was getting about 8 mpgs. They added a bunch of mods (most of the same things listed by fedyfedz) and they brought it up to something like 18 mpgs. Some of what they did won't apply to your Explorer, but some will.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Check out Aldives "Quest for 30 MPGs" thread, theres quite a bit of info in there.
