I'm currently having problems with my fuel gage, it alway's reads empty. I've tried to trouble shoot it with no success, the only thing i havent done is changed my fuel pump.
Another problem I have is, my automatic transmission will not transfer from 2 Wheel to 4 Wheel Drive. I dont have any lights on my councel to indicate that the 4 Wheel on the fly is working. I pulled the councel out and checked the wireing, and all is fine. I'm thinking i have a bad switch on my councel.

The fuel gauge is probably the sending unit, but i don't know. Could be a wire somewhere too i suppose. As far as the fourwheel drive goes, i just had the same problem, someone told me to tap on the motor that shifts the transfer case with a hammer while someone else pushes the button...sure enough it worked for me. Sometimes the motor sticks if you don't use it very often appearantly. It could be one of many other problems too, but start easy!

For the 4x4 motor, do a search for it it's a common probleme, or go to Dr Bob page Dead Link Removed it will answer almost all your question. For The fuel gage it is the sending unit or the gage itself, clean all the connection that are under the vehicule, sometimes it just need better contact in the connector. If not with a voltmeter check at the gage to see if voltage come from the sending unit in the tank, if 0 or almost nothing them the fault should be at the sending unit, if there is voltage then mostly the gage should be the culprit. I dont know the amount necessairy to drive the gage, but if you have some 12 volt variable supply, then you could test the gage for movement/no-mouvement.

Another Question about On the Fly 4 Wheel Drive

The Electronic Shift Control Module, does it have anything to do with not being supplying power to the 4X4/OverDrive push button on the counsel?

That is the only thing I havent checked. And this is the only electrical module to the Transfer Case of a 1994 Explorer as far as I can find in the Haynes Repair Manual.

Control module

Do you ear some cliking sound from back there where the module is, if Yes then I would bet on the shift motor, if not maybe your control module is shot. On Dr Bob page there is a test you can do on the module, to see if it is still working. As for overdrive, I cannot tell because I have manual...

4X4 Problems

I'm not getting any lights on my push button on the counsel. Looks like i'm not getting any power at all. I looked at the wireing diagram but cant find were the problem could be. I've checked the fuses, with no luck. I even went to the Transfer Case to look at the condition even turned the drive shaft to see if there was any binding. Everything looks great. The only thing i have in mind is the Electronic Shift Control Modual maybe fried.

No electrical power no 4x4:(

I had the same problem with my four wheel buttons. the lights came on but no engage from the transfer case. well this might sound stupid but the person i bought my x from hadn't used the 4x4 for a long time and the little motor on the transfer case froze up and all it took was to take a hammer and tap on it lightly a few times and now it works great. It is located on the back side of the tcase. try this and see if it works, if not then sorry.

4X4 Problem

My push button dont even light up. The person i bought if from said he had a radio put in and it hasnt worked since. So, I checked the cables nothing broken behind the radio. So, its further down the line.

I didn't get any dash lights on mine either, I'd press teh button and absolutely nothing happened, but the hammer trick worked for me, i'd atleast try it.

4X4 Problems

Ok i'll give it a shot, and let you know what happens. I'm starting to like this message board, great tips all over.

I had the same problem a few weeks ago. I would push the buttons, but nothing happened. No lights, no clicking, nothing. It also happened the same time when my Sony CD deck wouldn't turn on. It so happens that the fuse for the 4x4 in the fuse box is also connected to the radio. I checked all the fuses and found that it was blown. Popped in a new fuse and bam! radio works, 4x4 works. I was primarily concerned that my radio got fried and then I found out that the 4x4 didn't work, so that added to my worries, until I found out that the fuse was blown.

After looking inside the dash, I discovered that a wire for my radio adapters rubbed again the for the vents for the heating. The radio quit when I moved the arm and I didn't think it was the problem, but it was. Now everything is out of the way and I have tunes and 4x4.

I had the same problem....no light at the 4X4 button and NO click form the ESC module....also our trans was shifting funny from 3rd to 4th..it was kind of like you were just pumping the gas pedal to the floor and back real quick..if you backed off the throttle just a little it would go ahead and shift ok..our module is out.......motor on transfer case worked fine when 12V was jumpered to it. Hope this helps.
