Can anyone tell me of an easy way to diagnose an intermittent fuel pump problem? I have been have issue with lack of power, rough idle random misfire, etc. I did check my fuel pressure, but just to see if it went up to acceptable limit (and it did). Thing is I think it may lose pressure at times and cause issue. Also, I think I am the first to change the fuel filter and the truck has 102,+++ miles on it!

I also noticed that lately, it takes a little more to start in the morning and this AM it started and then immediately stalled....so???

I would like to diagnose this and see if in fact it is time for a new one....if so I am gonna do the tank and pump in one shot. Please help....

Oh, one more thing....what brand pump do you all recommend?

Thank you

Have you cleaned the IAC?

Can you test the fuel pressure as you drive?

That would give you a better idea when the pressure drops and whether the pump or a clogged filter is causing this...

When you changed the filter what did the fuel from the inlet side of the filter look like? If it was rusty/dirty/coffee colored, this crap is probably coming from the inside of the tank and will continue to clog up the filter...

The IAC is new, as are most of the parts on the vehicle at this point!!....the fuel from the filter was dark like coffee, but also I changed the filter again recently. One thing I did notice is that I have almost an empty tank right now and it actually seems to run better!?!?!? Any thoughts?

Also, if I wanted to test as I drove, how could I do that?

Attach a fuel pressure gauge...

And run the engine through the rpm range...If the gauge hose is long enough, I would attach it to the cowl and drive the vehicle in the way your performance come up...Since you have a 2000 Explorer, the fuel pressure should be 65-72 psi and be steady no matter what the load on the engine...

If the pressure drops, and you recently changed the fuel filter, you can PROBABLY rule out a clogged filter...But if the inlet fuel looked like coffee you are picking up this junk from inside the fuel tank...
