Hi folks. I just got my fuel tank out because I have a dead pump. Is it possible to rebuild these ? The wrecker wants $125 CDN for a used one and I'm thinking that is a gamble considering how hard it is to get to. Do people or shops rebuid these or is just a toss and replace model. Whats the diff between the $49 ones on ebay and the $390 from the dealer ?

Thanks

If I'm not mistaken the dealer sells the whole assembly, float & pump. Can you go to a local auto parts store and get just the pump?
Personally I've never heard of rebuilding a fuel pump. I always replace with new because as you said the for the amount of work to get to it you don't want to have to do it twice.

In most setups the parts stores only sell the pump, even the strainer is sold separately. I am not aware that an electric fuel pump is rebuildable. There are wearing parts and you'd need some sort of rebuild kit. I have never seen one. I also recall some portions of the pump are crimped... but I might be mistaken on that.

In short, Buy a new one. I seem to recall that the one for my 92 cost about $100. The one on my 93 Sable was $100 and the strainer was $7. (I remember that because I bought THAT one last weekend at Autozone, and it's a Bosch).

I just replaced my fuel pump a couple of weeks ago and got it from a store which I found on Ebay. You get the pump, installation kit and strainer, as well as warranty!! The store I got it from has a website where they sell pumps for all makes a models, I got mine from them and it works great. Their site is www.efuelpumps.com, I suggest you check it out, and their prices are great too!!
