My son's 2003 Mountaineer AWD 6 Cyl. has error codes indicating a failed fuel tank pressure sensor. test voltage shows 5+ volts when turning on the ignition. (about 2 volts high)
Does anyone have any tips or tricks for replacing this sensor without actually removing the tank which is full of fuel?
Thanks for your help

Thanks!

Thank You so much for the info. We're going to give it a try.
Sure beats dropping the tank.

You got that right.... My 2nd gen tank was freshly filled when my 150,000 mile oem fuel pump decided to die. Cutting the access panel took me about an hour, and will save even more time on future repairs. You can also get pretty creative with how you choose to re-cover that hole. See this thread (for second gens, but concepts apply) for some great ideas:

I don't think aluminum tape is really enough to seal a hole in the floor of the body.

The problems never end

Now we are being told that the fuel tank pressure sensor is not a replaceable part. Apparently it is part of an evaporative canister line and is only available as a unit. We don't know at this point if this can be replaced without dropping the tank. Anybody have any experience with this?
