Year, Model & Trim Level
04 Ford Explorer 4.6l
'04 4.6l 167,000. Timing guides and tensioners a were replaced last year, I believe.

So recently my long term fuel trim has been running at +3.91 or so, but also near 0.

The short term has spiked as much as +13 and as low as -4.7.

02 sensors seem to be running at proper voltages.

Fuel trim is more problematic on bank 1. Worse at start up and initial drive. Once I've been driving for a bit (usually freeway) it almost levels out, but not always.

Yesterday, dropping my daughter off at home, the exhaust smelled of rotten eggs, first time and not since.

Idle seems to have a miss, but I checked for a misfire and there was none.
I even followed this article:
http://www.motor.com/article.asp?article_ID=1794
And found no variance in the generic codes.

And of course, there are no stored nor pending codes at all.
I've sprayed carb cleaner around the engine (engine cold) but had no change in idle.

There appears to be a 'knock' noise at the followers at start up, which goes away after 15 minutes or so, maybe less. And upon acceleration I hear what sounds like valve clatter (like my old '94, kinda.). Thinking maybe I have a follower going out. Don't know if this would cause any of my symptoms.

Negative fuel trims.

I guess as a note, got new Autolite Iridiums at time of timing chains but reused coils and boots.

If you read the article, you'd see that there can be a detected misfire, but if it isn't sufficient, it won't set a code. When I looked to see if there were any variances in cylinder to cylinder 'soft' misfire, there was none.

Do you use motorcraft filters? They have a special drainback valve for these engines. Not saying that is your problem but I have a few 4.6L and those filters keep them quiet.

Also, how is your intake manifold? They are known to leak(even the metal crossover ones) and drip coolant into a coil pack, causing little issues. Pull some of the coils near the thermostat housing and look for any water intrusion. The water could boil off very quickly.

How is fuel pressure at idle?
