Help?!?!

I have had a funny noise coming from my 94 Explorer for some time. I can't pinpoint it but I swear it is exhaust related, but after inspection by a muffler shop that is not the problem. My parents have a 98 Explorer that is starting to make the same noise. The noise almost sounds like birds chirping or similar to that anyway. I have also heard other explorers make this noise. Anyone have any ideas what it is or how I can fix it myself. It is really loud and quite embarrasing.

I had a noise similar to that and it turned out to be my belt tensioner. Get a 3-4ft piece of hose and use that as a stethiscope(sp?). It should really pinpoint your problem.
