funny smell

My 91 explorer has a bit of a funny smell to it when it is running like the feul isnt being completly burnt like a 2 stroke boat motor. i put my had near the exaust and i can smell the fuel is on my hand. also when i go to turn off the engine right as it does it last few rotations befor it dies out there is a rattleing noise

Most likely you are describing 'dieseling'...might be wrong..but it also sounds like your timing is a bit off. and your injecting fuel just after the TDC and the exhaust side valve is still open. HAd a simial instance in my old 94...timing was off a bit...dealer fixed it right up (under their 90 day warr.).
