I got some Jacobs 8.5mm plug wires. It came with some literature that said since they are better and more efficient than the stock wires that you can gap the plugs 5 thousands over the manufactures recommended size for better combustion. Is that a good idea?

They claim that their wires are about 250 ohms per foot. You could compare your wires to the new set to see the actual difference. If the resistance is substantially lower, then you could try using a bigger spark gap. A performance coil pack would also help.
