I have been looking for a replacement vehicle for my daily driver...it is a very old Saab. I have loved that vehicle because it has gotten great gas mileage and has been unbelievably dependable. However, it is time for a newer vehicle.

I was wondering what peoples experience has been regarding gas mileage and maintenance issues for 94-96 Explorers. In addition, I was wondering if there are any major differences (engine, tranmission, etc.) between these years.

I tried out a 95-98 Saab and truthfully I don't fit in them well  The compartment where your feet go is so narrow, that your right leg has to stay straight on the gas pedal and is wedged in by the center console....not real comfortable beyond a quick drive.

Please help me out here...would love to get another Explorer if it makes sense..but for right now the competition is a Camry, Taurus or Accord:o

Honestly, if you're used to the economy of a medium sedan you're not gonna be happy with the Explorer. As with all truck-based SUVs, weight is high and it has the aerodynamics of a brick. Add to that a large displacement 6 and it doesn't do great.

If you're careful with it you could average about 16/21, but most get closer to about 14/18.

Do you need the utility? Offroad capability? If not, then I'd look at the cars honestly. I decided to get a car after realizing I don't have the time or money to wheel right now. I loved my truck and will get another when resources allow, but now I have a great fun DD.

Take a look at VWs if you haven't yet. Good luck!

you could look at a small pickup like a ranger,
those get decent gas mileage if you get the 4 cylinder with the 5-speed
or the 3.0 liter V6 doesn't get half-bad gas mileage either
