What's a decent price for having rings and pinions installed not including parts. And should I have anything else changed like bearings? The wear on the ring and pinions in similar to the wear that is already on my X, they're not new. The rings and pinions have 115K on them and my X has 88K on it.

Also what do you have to do to fix the Speedometer/Odometer after changing the gears? Does the install shop usually do it?

it all dpends on the person you go to. some do it for 200-250 an axlesome do it for 400-450 an axle. thats the price ranges ive been qoauted

Come on - search a little. I have done many posts about fixing the speedo and finally fixed it - I'll give you a hint - its in the computer section and it's a sticky http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=113

Now, most shops don't have access to the NGS or WDS or any other reprogramming software/interface - so your best bet is to go to ford and have them do it.

I find this MANDITORY on any gear change - an install kit. Bearings, seals, etc etc are all included and you'll have brand new differential guts besides the carrier. Are you wanting a price quote on the front or rear axle? That makes a huge diference. The front axle is hard to get to and will have to come out - the rear axle just sits there and is easy to do without too much trouble. I would suspect 400-450 for the rear (with install kit and R&P gears) and close to 600 for the front (intall kit and R&P). Good luck

I did search. Do you know how many posts come up when you search for gear, re gearing, re-gearing ect? It'd take hours to go through them. As far as the sticky post I wanted to make sure there wasn't anything else that needed to be done to fix it. I remember reading a post where you had to change a plastic gear on the transfer case or something to fix it.

yours is a computer that deals with your speedo. there is callibrators but i dont think its worth the price. the stealership will do it and you know it would be done right.

I already have the R&P for the front and rear. So you recommend new bearings and seals?

Yes, cheap insurance.

I've had my truck regeared for 800 labor the first time, and 250 labor the second. Had a 4x4 shop do all the work the first time. The second time I pulled the front axle and found a rear end shop. They charged $100 for the front (out of rig), and $150 for the rear (on rig). Those are about the extremes.

about the gear change in the transmission to correct the speedo - again in my thread about reprogramming it states:

98-01 -- Reprogramable through the GEM or ABS Module
91-97 -- Gear Change (for the transmission)

wow jefe. thats damn cheap.

Hmm, I didn't think it was that big of a deal for a shop set up to do it. Sounds like it's going to cost twice as much or more to have them installed than what it cost for the parts. :(

Yeah they are usually busy.. They are on of the main vendors on a local MD 4x4 club so they get alot of business.
