Glow Guage Installation Troubles HELP ASAP

(1995 Ford Explorer XLT) Last week i had taken apart my entire dashboard so that i can install my new aftermarket glow guages. I was reading that you splice the red wire into the white with black stripe wire and that you ground the black wire obviously. But when i tried them nothing lit up. Does anyone have any suggestions on the wiring, i had another inveter (wiring) sent to me from the company so im attempting this again. Also what is the best way to ground the black wire, and if i do not ground it during the test will teh guages still light up? If anyone has done this before, have any suggestions or even installs. i had glow guages in my old subaru that i had and i wired mine up with the hot goin to a acc. point in the fuse panel that is only hot with the switch on (just strip the wire and stick it in the hole at the same time your inserting the fuse back in) and the ground i grounded to the dash bar with a self tapping screw..hope this helps you some
