I have a 2002 Explorer XLT 4X4 with 159K miles and have a grinding noise in the rear that is audible at low speads (10-20 mph) expecially when I am coasting. Grinding still persists when in Neutral. I had all 4 hub bearing assemblies changed (because the alignment shop said they were bad) and was hoping that the new bearings all round would stop the noise. It did not.

Any suggestios on what that grinding noise could be?

After the allighment tomorrow I expect the noise to still be there, but the allignment is still needed because i have a camber issue with a rear tire as well. But doubt the camber issue is causing the metal grinding noise. So I plan on removing the tires and inspecting things. To eliminate the effect of the rotors...i was thinking of removing the rotors, putting a block of wood between the break pads, and putting the tires back on for a very slow speed drive up and down the road. If the grinding noise goes away then the problem is the breaks. If the noise persists then it is something else.

Anybody have some suggestions for me? Is what I plan on doing potentially going to damage anything?

You may want to check the rear brakes to see if anything's hanging up on you.
