My explorer is an 06 XLT 4x4 with 55k on it. I've noticed over the weekend a mechanical faint grinding noise somewhere in the drive train when it is not under load. To explain more, it goes away when accelerating, but when coasting to a stop light, etc, you can hear it. I'm assuming these don't use U joints anymore, but CV joints? I was thinking it might be one of those....

Any insight?

Are u touching the break pedal when U are coasting to a stop.? If U are Im thinking pad wear sensers.

That's what I thought at first, but found that it was occurring when not touching any pedals, just freewheeling.

I have the exact same problem. I'm wondering if it could be a wheel Bearing.
I tried shifting to neutral and reving the engine and the noise did not change. When I coast to a stop, it sounds like I have really large offroad tires making that humming noise.

I forgot to update this post. I took it in and at first they told me it was a rear wheel bearing that was completely seized. They replaced it and told me it was all set. I got home that night and called the Svc manager and advised the noise still existed. He told me to bring it back the next day.

I took it in and the mechanic, who thought he was God's gift to the mechanic world, told me he wanted to ride with me. I took him for a ride and he heard the noise, which probably disappointed him.

They then replaced the entire contents of the rear differential (covered by warranty til 60k).

This took care of the problem. It's been 1500 miles or so since then and it's been good. Just 500 miles to warranty is gone.....

Was that an extended warrenty, or are they all good for 60k on the drivetrain?

Normal Warranty. Not sure if they're all like that, but from what I understood, 06's had a 6/60 power train.
