I’ve seen similar questions on here but not quite the same. I have a 2015 Explorer. Whenever I enable Gravel Mode and go around a turn (both left or right), I hear and feel the front wheels grinding and the slip warning light on the dash blinks. Yes, I’m on a gravel road when using gravel mode 😂. This only happens in Gravel mode — doesn’t happen on the others, like mud/rut, etc. When I got out of the car afterward, I could smell an almost burning smell. Any thoughts on what is causing this?

Welcome to the Forum.
I don't have the answer but did this just start occurring? How many miles on the vehicle?
I don't know if the PTU gets used more often in that mode or not. Has the PTU fluid ever been changed?

New to the Explorer but will provide some observations. In the other two modes traction control is disabled, the third mode normal does have traction control but the bias of providing rear drive I would venture to guess is much less stress on the PTU. Go to the settings in display and disable traction control and do another road test while in gravel mode with traction control light on, note any changes however slight.
My first look underneath would be towards the PTU checking for leaks, fluid condition and general appearance.
