Hi well my 92 X is starting to be a pta. I have replaced the shocks, radius arm bushings, and brake pads, shoes, etc. Well the problem now is that even after all of that I still get a grinding sound. It sounds like brakes but they are all new. Everything looks ok under the truck no leaks... well no major leaks anyways. Does anyone have any ideas of where I should look? Or could it be that the breaks just need to wear a bit?

grinding is not normal, you said you replaced the brakes, what condition are your bearings in?

Some more details like where the grinding is coming from and the conditions in which it appears would be more helpful in diagnosing your problem. Could it also be a blown hub, I believe that is a weak point on the first gens assuming you have auto hubs in the first place.

What everyone said (check the hubs, rotors, bearings), plus what condition were your calipers? If your calipers are old, they might be sticking a little bit.

Also when you did your brake job, did you put brake lube (silglyde, etc.) on all of the contact points? Did you put the anti-rattle clip on?

I change a lot of brakes and if the rotors or drums are rust pitted(rust holes) on the surface where the pads and shoes rub, they will grind almost as bad as metal to metal. Also with our pads and shoes, you will get a slight rubbing, not grinding, sound out of them for a few miles till they wear in. If it is not any of that, then check what everyone else said.

Got it

Well I figured it out. Apparently a caliper pin decided to take a vacation and when it did the inner brake pad on the drivers side was grinding on the rotor. Good thing when I replaced the brakes I got the warranty huh? So new caliper pins and rotors and pads, and now the X drives like it should. Thanks again for all of your input though. This site has really helped me alot.

Another thing you should do is put some silglyde on the back side of the inner pad. And lube the caliper slide pins every 6 months, that will really prolong the life of the pads and the rotors too. It only takes a minute to bang out the pins, clean and re-lube them and it's worth it.

My current truck wears the inner pad faster than the outer. I'm running some old calipers, I probably should replace them next brake job.
