Gringing Noise when engaging 4Low.

Okay I was in the garage last night and put it in 4L just to listen and it went "Grrrrrriiinnndddd---CLUNK"

I have heard the "CLUNK" before and that seems like a normal sound thouth I have never heard the grinding.

It sounds like a spline shaft spinning and not engageing into the 'female' reciever.

For those that boat it sounds like the 'Shear' coupling when putting your boat into gear.

Any suggestions, or warnings?? If this has happened to you...

Weird noises are perfectly fine in 4x4.

You should hear the horrible noises mine makes. It makes me flench they are so loud. But to this day, I haven't broken anything.

Have you tried to do it again? Does it do it all the time now?

Gotta disagree with ya Jason. Fischer, your TC should not sound like that. Could be that something wasn't lined up right, one in a million. You should get a smooth transition from 2wd to 4wd to 4lo.

Was it still cold? I know that my t-case would make quite a bit more noise when shifted cold. Remember that the only way oil is pumped around in the T-case is when the vehicle is moving. So if you had just started her up, and then shifted it into 4-lo, nothing would be lubricated yet.

when was the last time you put it in 4-lo?
If its been a while, its probably just a bit sticky and needed to be lubricated.
Try is a few more times and see if it still makes the noises.

It has not made the noise since. Prior to putting it into 4L it had not been engaged for some time. Probably almost a month...I know I know..


Also I think that it may have been that I put it in Neutral and shifted into 4L, the whole while my foot was on the brake. Perhaps I should have rolled a bit then stopped and then switched into 4L to remove any tension on the drevetrain.

I guess we will see

Your foot is supposed to be on the brake when shifting in and out of 4lo.
