I have a 1999 Ford Explorer Limited 4.0L Sohc. Custom SCT Tune and CAI. I wanted a high flow exhaust, with little to no sound change. Went to a cool shop here in town, and got this put on. Cat back 2.5" pipes. Muffler is a stainless magnaflow model number 12258. Got a nice tip also. It sounds great at idle, and on the highway, but around town, or from street light to street light it has a bass sound and when rev'd it sounds ricey. I am 100% not happy. it was $240 which was a good price, and came with a chrome tip. The owner is going to help me out, but was surprised i thought it was loud. It may be quiet in some peoples eyes, but I want Stock sound, or barely noticed sound. I just wanted it to flow better, and get a retune. I searched every post with the search option, but nothing specific was said. Anyone have ideas? I have to call him tomorrow.
Thanks!

Try a resonated tip- seriously. I put an ebay special on mine with my magnaflow and I really like it. It takes the drone out and the edge off the Magnaflow. Mine was louder than I expected also, its definitely louder than stock, but the tip really, really helps.

The tip:

I appreciate that option, but I really like my tip. If anything I will go with a can resonator in the pipe line if I have to. I will post pics to this post eventually. The guy who did it has been doing exhaust work for 22 years. IS YOUR Magnaflow the same part number with dual in single out?

Thats exactly what it looked like, but I think that they mostly look like that. I like the idle, and I like the highway sound. I dont like the way it sounds in 2nd gear around 2000rpms and up. It just a bass drone that is obnoxious.

I have a single tip pass side exit. So a resonator welded in after the muffler?

I had a resonated tip on my Paseo before. A junk Pilot brand.

It did nothing to reduce the decibles output :thumbdwn:
The resonator slots filled with exhaust gunk :thumbdwn:
The resonator rusted and flaked out :thumbdwn:
The only good thing was that exterior was stainless

Current tip is a stainless Gibson slant cut tip

im still not convinced. Maybe I will just go back to my stock muffler....Bummer!

2 options:
Buy a glasspack as a resonator. A cheap one from summit will do. It's 18" I believe. Get it welded in after your muffler. This will muffler the sound quite a bit

or

Get a quiet muffler welded in. Thrush Turbo/Dynomax Super Turbo/Summit Turbo are all quiet. I would go with the super turbo if you want free flowing. Dynomax also makes a muffler called Quiet flow which is supposed to be better than stock, but sound stock

I have the super turbo. It gets loud under hard accelleration...but thats it. I had a flowmaster 40 on and after getting a noise ticket, I put this muffler on. I passed inspection with it....

How's the highway drone with the super turbo?

I second the resonator. I haven't worked with truck exhausts much, but with aftermarket exhaust on my last car, a decent sized resonator welded in made all the difference.

And when all else fails just throw one of these in your exhaust pipe.

Exhaust Mounted fake BOV valve

It won't make it quieter, but it'll confuse the hell out of people.

ROFL. those things are hillarious.

Strange that you guys recommend the super turbo, because that is what my muffler guy said is going to be installed next as a replacement. I think froader has that super turbo muffler sound on youtube? Still sounds loud to me. Hope it works!

What exactly do you mean here?

AFBoy143. ANy chance on getting a sound clip from you? Man, I just really dont want to do this over again, and not be happy still.

Nevermind on the sound clip, yours would be different with headers and no cats. bummer. We both have 99 SOHCS

rob17, When I got a noise violation ticket, I installed 1 highflow cat and the superturbo, got it inspected by a sheriff, and I passed....and in order to pass I had to put my "stock system back on". If you are really scared, just get the super turbo installed with a glass pack installed after this. This should make it pretty much silent. Its quiet til you get on it hard. Highway/cruising drone is non existant. With no cats and the mods I have, its a lot louder than with stock everything.
