Hi guys, i'm selling my X, i've been selling it for the past 3months with no luck!! Its a 98' XLT with 127k miles, rebuilt transmission (1yr ago), new front suspension (all bushings/ shocks), a/c was serviced with new freon (pulled a vacuum/ checked for leaks), new push rods/ rocker arms with all new felpro gaskets, stock 16" eddie bauer rims, clean title, all pwr option, runs great with no issues. I'm trying to get $3000 and the highest offer has been $2500. The truck is really clean and i think it's worth the $3k, what you guys think?? Is it over priced??

Unfortunately, it is. I would've taken the $2500..

$2000 - 2200 is average for good condition late 90's around Chicago in private party transactions.

Keep in mind there were a whole lot of 4x4 SUVs made in the past 20 years with many still on the road. Craigslist is chocked full of explorers, blazers, and cherokees all around the same price. Your market may be different if you dont have the rust we see here, but you are trying to sell a very common 14 year old vehicle with relatively poor fuel economy.

It's a v6 ohv engine. I guess you guys are right, that's probably why it hasn't sold yet. The $2500 offer was yesterday so I guess I'll call him back (I told him I'll think about it). I just see so many cars in the $2000-2500 range that once you buy then you have to dump another $1000 on repairs. My X needs nothing, everything works besides everything else that has been recently repaired. I guess this will be a good deal for the buyer..

Where are you advertising, craigslist, ebay?

Is the problem you're not getting enough inquiries, or you just can't close a deal?

Down here in Central FL, the dealers would ask five grand if it's truly in great shape. Craigslist prices are around 2500 for a piece of junk, and 1500 if it needs a new motor.

A perfect example:
the reason I'm sellin my X is because I bought a 2000 mountaineer, one owner, 91k, very clean in and out.. Once I started driving it around things started coming out.. The transmission had a jump going into o/d, didn't feel it that much when I test drove it but then it got worst (now It slips going into o/d), the a/c cools less as rpm's raise (like when cruising on the highway at 2k+ rpm's), the radio display doesn't turn on (he said it was a fuse, turns out to be the radio), I removed the tires and it needs brakes and a couple of bushings are bad, needs a new steering wheel (which i knew when I bought it but it's just something to add).. I paid $3300 for this truck, I'll end up spending over $4k to get it to where "everything works"..
If it wasn't because I really like the 5.0 engine and the mountaineer's front end I would sell it and just keep my X.. Besides the fact that I will never make my money back once I fix the mountaineer to what it will be worth win everything fixed.. I guess I just made a bad deal, maybe there's truck in good condition in that price range.

i've listed it on craigslist (about 15 times), i also wrote for sale with the price/ info/ phone number in the front and rear windows. I'm not getting inquiries, people dont call. I live in a small town east of Houston, TX, but i advertise it in Houston.. I see similar trucks selling for around $4k on craigslist (dealers) which i think is high, i figured $3k was fair.. I'm originally from Miami, FL, where i sold many cars and i've never struggled, i'm thinking the location is part of the problem..

I have scored a lot of really good stuff for cheap, including Explorers from Craigslist. And everytime I get a GREAT price on something, it's because the guy is SO FAR out in the sticks, nobody is willing to drive out there to get it...

Location, Price, Location...those are the deciding factors on whether you get what you want from CL.

That's true, except I list it in CL, in the city of Houston which is a big city, very populated.

Yeah....and I live 14 miles West of Seattle.....but it takes about 1.5 hours to get there...damn water!!!

You may LIST it in Houston....but you still live OUTSIDE of the city. And people looking for something IN the city...where you are NOT located....

Drop your price to 2500 and see who bites..Don't take anything less than 2200.

This is spot on. Cars are the worst investment. I understand that you maintained your vehicle, and it's not a pile. I'm the same way with my X....Mine is pretty mint and mechanically in great shape, however I know once the time comes to sell I wont be able to get much more than your typical craiglist beater X.

One Explorer guy told me something (funny) that stuck with me:

"What's the difference between a well taken care of, low mileage Explorer for sale and a beat to crap one?"

"About $200"

I'm usually around houston so meeting someone IN the city is not a problem. In fact, I've driven the truck to Houston 3 times just to show it to different potential buyers, once they see it and drive it, they give me a bs offer and i refuse..
My next door neighbor is now interested in buying it, she offered $2800, i told her ok, she said tomorrow she'll get it.. We'll see..
