I've got a '95 Explorer that I need some help with. When the motor is warmed up, if you kill the truck and let it sit for a few minutes and then try to restart it, it is very hard to start. The engine cranks very well and it always eventually starts, but its very difficult to start. So far this does not occur when the motor is cool. I'd like to avoid taking in to the dealer, as I'm fairly certain I could fix the problem if someone could help me diagnosis it.

thanks alot

I've experienced the same thing and found it may be vapor lock. Try a different brand of gas, which is what worked for me.

It may also be the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve. Very easy to replace and relatively inexpensive, about $30.

Welcome to the site! If the crank position sensor (?) is going, you will have the problem you are describing.

and if it is the crank position sensor, how hard is that to do?

We have a similar problem in our 95 Sport, except that it doesn't eventually start. When it finally happened at a gas station with a diagnostic tool, that was the code that came up.

I have noticed however, that on the occasions when this happens, I don't hear the whine of the fuel pump getting the system up to pressure. Would an inoperable crank position sensor stop power to the fuel pump?

Ours seems to be completely random too. Some days you can stop and go all day long and its fine. Others it won't even start from cold in the morning (like today).
