Have any of you folks added a wireless cell phone charger to your 3rd gen at all? I've seen some other vehicles with a wireless charger added in some fashion.
I have a "vision" but not sure if it'll fully work. Ideally, I'd like to put a wireless charger in that blank spot just below the HVAC controls. I would take apart a wireless charger and just use the coil and the control board and place that whole assembly on the backside of that space. I could theoretically set my phone on the rubber "lip" with the back of the phone against the console's plastic and it would charge through that. Though I wonder if the plastic of the console is too thick to pass the charge to the phone.
The only other issue I'm thinking of is getting power to the charger. The easy, more expensive way would be to buy a new head unit that has a USB plug on the rear of it. That way it would only get power when the vehicle is running or on accessory.
The cheaper, more complex way (at least for me since I suck at electrical wiring) would be to tap into that wiring that goes to what would be the extra cig lighter/power port at the front of the console. But I'd also need a way to have that shut off when the vehicle is off...I wouldn't want the charger powered when the vehicle is not on.
I want it in that spot because it's most ideal for the phone if I'm running GPS. I've placed a magnet there already to hold the phone in place since the case I have on the phone is just a little too thick now to allow the phone to stand there on it's own. Every time I accelerate, the phone would just flop down into the console tray.
So...has anyone done this mod at all?
