I had driven my explorer nearly all day, off and on. At about 7:20 pm, my 14 yr. son and I went for a drive around our community. When we started back home at about 8:15 pm we turned up our driveway which is kinda steep and a little rough (not too bad, because my stepdaughter has driven her new Honda Accord up it several times with no problem), when about 1/2 way up the drive the Explorer stopped moving (the engine was still running, it just was not moving), it's a V6, automatic, I had my son get out and go to the top of the drive. I rolled the vehicle back to the foot of the hill and got it going again, and managed to get it to the top of the hill and 1/2 way turned around in the driveway, when my son started yelling at me that the Explorer was on fire underneath. I got out and tried to open the hood to combat the flames, all the while telling my son to call the fire department. I couldn't get the hood open, so I started throwing rainwater out of our rain barrels on the flames, to no avail, then the fire dept. arrived, but my Explorer is now a total loss, and I cannot understand how normal driving (no 4 wheel drive used at all ) could lead to my Explorer to burning up completely. We smelled NO gas fumes or any other fluids. I just cannot understand what happened!!
