Where is the sensor telling the car that the door is open / closed? It must be stuck or shorted or wire stripped or some such thing.

95 Explorer 2 Door XLT (no towing package)

i dunno if yours in the same but on my 92 if you open the door and look on the inside of the door hinge...on the body of the truck theres a little black button that gets pressed when the door closes....

mine got frozen when it got really really cold outside, which was weird the first time it happened...thought my battery was gone..hehehe

check for a little black button inside the door hinge

located in the front wall of the door jamb... it is black and about the size of a pencil eraser.... after i wrecked mine, my dome light wouldnt go off... the body was tweaked... so i added a washer underneath the thing and it works fine now

I have a 95, which is the 95-01 generation. I think it's different than the previous generation as I don't see the pieces you guys mentioned

Okay, I'm going to look again. I appreciate the help as this is driving me and my wife INSANE!!@#$!@#$

i was gonna say i believe my dads old 97 ranger had the little knob/button dealy too inside the door hinge

Nope... no buttons or anything. There is a rubber bumper on the rear side of the door, but it's not a button, just a rubber pad.

I'm going CRAAAZZZZYYYY :)

Anyone have a wiring diagram or something?

Okay, found out the answer:

They didn't use a 'plunger-style' button, it's a ball bearing inside the door panel/hinge. The whole door needs to be taken apart to change out the part to a better designed piece:

The switch is inside the door, and is mounted to the door latch. You have to pull the door latch out to replace it (at least that is what the manual says about my '99).

Oops! I'm slow  , I see you found the answer while I was looking up the info on the CD.

Take the door panel off, remove the two spade connectors that go into the back of the door handle, then nothing should come on. I believe they get dirty, and just pulled it, and used the dome light switch on the dash to control the light. Cheap and relatively easy fix.

After all this, I think it's the hatch. The light only goes off when I REALLY slam the hatch. Any advice? Same as door?

The hatch switch is in the striker that locks the door. I have no ideas on how to fix it other than pulling the wire from it:(
