I've been looking to get something to replace the X and have been told that I can't remove the stock radio from most newer trucks because it controls other things like the security system, door locks and other stuff. Plus the new truck may have DVD naviagation so I don't want to mess with that.

So what if I took the stock system, left the factory HU in place and front speakers in place (in case the DVD naviagation uses them) and removed the rear speakers. Then installed my aftermarket HU in another spot, put the aftermarket front speakers into kickpanels, aftermarket rear speakers into the stock location, sub and amps in the cargo area.

That should work right? the cars brain will think everything is okay and I will have my aftermarket stereo. If there is a better way let me know.

Thanks (if it matters I want a 2005 pathfinder but have to test drive still)

a few companies now are making adaptors for all sorts of cars, maybe including the prospective pathfinder? Anything from onstar adaptors to navigation.... maybe check out www.crutchfield.com -- they seem to be semi-up to date on their adaptors and vehicle fit guide?

But as for your seperate system idea, rather unelegant in execution I'd imagine, but if its the only way?......

In my brothers caddy they just mounted the stock headunit in the trunk. Not sure about the speaker part of the question though... I don't know much about this stuff

a friend of mine had a pathfinder and he had to keep the stock radio in it since when he replaced the stereo he had a really bad engine noise coming through the stereo. He did add monitors, XM, and even amps and subs to his exising stereo .. Might want to think about that route....

im not an expert by any means but i dont see how changeing your speakers would upset anything. the hu is a different story though. but i think that if you put in an amp and subs and new speakers you could probably keep the stock hu and everything would be fine and you would have better sound.

almost all GM vehicles have this problem. The radio controls the security, cruise control, power windows, and daytime running lights. (How freaky is that!?)

They just mount the stock HU in the trunk, and wire a new one in. Ford tauruses have the oppesite problem, the stock HU really lives in the trunk already. ;)

Depending on the vehicle, you can get adapters for just about anything, for a price. I've seen denali's with steeringwheel controls still work with aftermarket parts... Dude lost the space under his seat to hide the stock HU, but he's got a niceass setup. :)

Similar subject so I'll ask here. I'm thinking about installing a second headunit strictly for use with the back seat controls for the kiddy's so they can listen to their annoying kid bop CD's on the headphones. Anybody heard of this or seen it done? Can it be done? I've already got a second deck just sitting around.
