Hey jayjay
The gaskets are dealer only in the uk but you could order from rockauto in the US or any other US supplier that'll ship, but they are ony £35 ish each from dealer. You may also want new manifold gaskets if you remove the manifolds. Additional to the head gaskets, whilst you have everything off it may be prudent to do the 00m12 kit shown below which has the upper and lower intake gasket rings and an updated tensioner for the passenger side head.

The devil will be in the removal of the top bolt for the rear timing cassette guide as it is at the rear of the drivers side head.

The next issue you will have is the timing. There is a special tool kit (otc-6488) you should use to lock the cams and the crank for the removal and for the retiming post work. It also has a special tool to be able to undo the D/S cam sprocket bolt (reverse thread) as again being at the rear of the engine access is minimal.

Do some research on this site about timing the engine as this is critical and if you get it wrong you will bust a load of valves! There are a couple of guys that have done the chains without the tool kit so it's possible.

The head bolts are supposed to be single use only but after talkin to some people that said you can get away with one retorque i chanced it and have had no problem.

All in all it's not something i would like to do with the engine in the car. If you are v. handy with the spanners it's do-able, if you are not that experienced ship it to Justin at explorerpartsuk or DuncanofEngland (Duncan is a member on this forum)

Do you have any chain rattle? If you do then this may be the time to address this also and pull the engine and do it all at once.;)

Regards

Oh and you will also need T30 (intake screws and guide bolt),T55 (most of the head bolts)and E12 (2 of the head bolts) sockets

i was wondering about doing about doing the 00m12 kit at thye same time-the chains were done about 20.000 miles ago thank god.the biggest pain with it all is the gasket is got a very very small blow in it!!now were do i get the tool kit foir the chains?and how much are thay?thanks for you help

They occasionally come up on ebay but you are prob lookin at importing from US @ $200 ish
Where are you in the country as someone on here may have a set you could borrow
I have a set if you any where near me.
Havin just reread your last post can you be sure the head gasket is the culprit. Where is the leak?

im in portsmouth.not sure were the leak is but theres oil in the water but no water in the oil theres no loss of power at all.ive did the test were the water changed colour and it did!unless it can leak from some were else?cant find anything on timeing on here?p.s thanks for your help so far!!

I would make sure that it is the head gasket before ripping into it. Get the water gas checked, it might be something else.

hi i may have a good secondhand engine for £250 it has no chain rattles i just want to do compression test on it .if all good would have to be collected from fareham only a few miles from you .cheers chris

I had oil in the water and it was coming from the transmission cooler on the side of the radiator. It had failed internally!!! I blanked the connections off and put another transmission oil cooler on.

as Kevin has said it may be the transmission cooler in the rad i would cheek the trans oil to see if its OK as while the engine is running the pressure is greater on the trans side so oil gets in the water but when you turn off the engine there's no pressure on trans side so water can get into the oil. cheers Chris

well ive just had the water gas checked and its got to b the head gaskets as it went from blue to green!!and theres still no water in the oil and everything else is fine.ive checked the trans and the oils still nice a pink.im not sure what to do now as do i buy an engine rebuild the topend and swap it over or rebuild the one ive got??she still drives fine and theres no loss of power at all infact its been a lot faster after ive changed the oil in the engine diffs and gearboxs!!!
