i don't get any heat b/c the door under the dash and stuff is stuck. i ws told by the repair guy that this is a problem w/ explorers and ford even sent a bulletin out, but no recall. the door may have to be replaced with a new kit for like $150 plus about 8 or 9 hrs of labor.the repair guy told me some people don't even fix it, quote "how bad do you wan't heat." thats not what i wanted to hear. any feedback?

The blend door is a massive job. You need to remove the entire dash, etc. In short, it's a nightmare. There was a thread about it a few days ago where you can cut a hole to help reach it without removing the dash.

Do a search for blend door.

try a search many people have fixed this on there own... i think its called the " blend door"

Try this as my take on the whole thing

Dead Link Removed

This is my post on some of the pictures and a few hints from when I did mine less than a month ago. Also, do a search for "blend door."

Here is the thread for fixing it without removing the dash. Dead Link Removed

You will need to do some cutting though. :(

Every season change I fear the dreaded blend door problem. Its like Russian roulette and this year I have won. I am afraid to adjust the heating / cooling controls.

When will ford issue a recall?

Oh wait, I can answer that,

NEVER!!!!

Thanks for posting that pagz. It seems like a rather interesting solution.

I hope I never have to try it. ;)

When the NHTSA determines that it is a safety or emissions related problem, in other words like your said "never".

well looks like i'm getting it fixed profesionally. to the tune of $600. when the guy first looked behind the glove compartment he found that someone had already done a quicky repair like the ones in some of the threads. i have to have heat so he ordered the new kit and it will be done thursday. kit is only $110, its the labor that is costing me. thanks for the help everyone. i guess the guy was right this morning when he said that this is a unfortunately common problem with X's.

blend door ?

So is this a problem with Explorer's with the automatic climate control ? I have a 1997 Eddie Bauer V8 2WD with climate control...and have been worried about this problem. I just bought mine two weeks ago, and love it so far. I am going to do a thorough inspection of the front end, put on new shocks, and do a brake job in the next week or so. I allready lowered the front, added ventshades, and started putting in the wiring to add to the JBL stereo.

Cost Shock

I just got off the phone with the Ford Dealer Service Department. I need to have the Blend Door repair done and it will cost me an estimated $775. Most of this is labor to pull out the dash. Additionally, he has to order the part, so it will take a couple of days. :(

holy ****... sorry for the language but damn. That's alot for that little peice of crap. That stupid thing went on me the other day so it gives me all winter to bug the ever living crap out of Ford till they do it for free. With only 70k miles on my truck, this pisses me off. Why not just put some 5 min epoxy on the blend door control stud and push it into place? Ford will hear from me on this one and I would advise everyone else to call too. At least it's cold out now...

that's funny, alphadog and alphabets. anyway, no way man don't let ford do it. ***** to them but don't give them the $ to do it. i wen't to a heating and electrical specialist in my area and they will do a better job than ford anyway. i brought it in tuesday and am getting it today. also it was cheaper. it' $600. still not cheap but gotta have heat.
