I just got a 95 Limited Explorer 4x4 and the trans slipps in drive. What trans do I have? Can it be rebiult with a soft part kit or do you need bands and hard parts. I have Old Bronco's and this is my first Ex. Any advice would be great :-)

It's probably the 4R55E, and figure $2,500+ to have a shop rebuild it.

Check first for low fluid, smell it and examine it to see if it's been overheated (burned smell) or has metal particles in it. If it's over about 120k miles then it's likely worn clutches and due for a rebuild. There could be electronic control issues but those should throw a code.

T trans code in the vin tag

I just went for a ride and the od light is still flashing. it is cold so the fluid is thick, drives great. I checked the fluid and it is full and not burned. it does have 176K on it and could use a rebuild. Are they easy to rebuild or do you need 1,000,000 in special tools?

I am an old master mech (old School 80's) not been into this kinda trans. I got a pump puller. need anything else?

thanks for you help

welcome
