Brain here....My real name is Brian, but the DMV put a typo on my DL and it stuck. Mechanical Engineer by trade. I've had my '92 EB 4x4 Explorer since about '95 and have logged about 70K miles in it. The tranny went out in Colorado Springs when I was on my way (with four other people) to go rafting. I feel like I got ripped off by a dealership (stealership :fire: ) but I was over a barrel. I've been lurking for some time because I wanted to fix it myself (possible save $2500 - and know it was done right), but didn't have the guts or time to dig into it until recently. So I've been in a condition of non-Exploring for almost three and a half years and I finally started the project this past month or so - working when I have time.
I'd just like to say thanks to this board and its members for providing me a little bit of courage and a whole lot of info on the A4LD and its habits. I have found the problem (OD band slipped, burnt, then failed), and just let me say that whoever can get more than 150K miles out of that tranny isn't really DRIVING their Explorer like I am, or at least WAS (1-2' deep snow, 60+MPH for many thousands of miles with slightly oversized tires). I know better now. Anyways thanks,
Brain (Brian)
