Hello, new member here. When should I change the timing chain. I’ve owned my truck since 2003, and my water pump needs replacing. I’ve never changed the timing chain before.

When should I change the timing chain
When it breaks

If it rattling on cold start
TRY and replace the tensioners but it may be to late
if it don't rattle on startup I'd leave it alone this motor is like pandoras box lol

THE BEST THING YOU CAN DO IS. CHANGE THE OIL OFTEN WITH SYNTHETIC TO KEEP YOUR TENSIONER S CLEAN

Welcome.

The chains very rarely fail.

The problem children are the plastic guides/cassettes that keep the chains tight. They get brittle, then chain slap breaks them. Then the chain makes a loud racket and eventually jumps timing.

My chains rattled for 80,000mi before I decided to swap the engine. Some people don’t get anywhere near that mileage once the noise starts. Some get more.
