Hello All. First post for me here, and I hope someone can offer advice or a story to help me figure out what the issue is before I go to a dealer or transmision shop.

The issue is the Wife's 2003 Mountaineer. Yesterday she tells me that its shifting hard from park into drive or reverse. Also she says that it is making a grinding noise, and on top of it all she states that sometimes the car will rev up, and not go out of the parking lot. The big thing was that the OD (overdrive) light was on and flashing and Check Transmision was on in the information center.

Well I didnt think she knew what she was talking about and over stateing the issue, so I took it out to the drug store last night. Guess what? She was right on.

It is difficult to describe other than what I said above. Its like the system is Low on Tranny Fluid, although the system is sealed.

Has anyone ran into this or have a buddy that has? I need to take it in this week and I dont like the dealer here in town, so If its bad I might have to take it about 50 miles away from here to a dealer that foul up everything they touch.

Or can a tranny shop do the work? I have a good one close here.

Thanks in advance,

Doug

You can bring it to a tranny shop. A lot of people have had very similar problems with they X's. Solutions are any where from a solenoid pack to a complete rebuild.

Good luck let us know the out come.

I was out of town for work yesterday so just now responding.

I have read a few threads on the tranny here ie, changing the fluid and the solonid pack. Great information.

the truck has 110K miles. Bought it in March with about 105 on it.

I guess what I am looking for is a direction to go. I checked the fluid in the trans, hot of course and got a trickle of fluid through the plug. Plus there is no sign of any leaks on the transmission at all. I did add some fluid to the transfer case but not much at all.

I can describe the issue a little better today.

When I drove the truck around the block a few times to warm the tranny up to check the fluid level, the truck was making a High pitched Whine noise. I can hear it in park and hear it when driving. the noise will change pitch the higher the RPM's go. Doesnt ever seem to go away.

While driving I noticed a BAD slip going into gears, and when I went to back the the thing in the drive way, i had no reverse. So I was stuck in my street. I went to pull it forward in my yard, and I had no forward gears at all. Matter of fact, the engine started to stall when I put it in drive and the same thing when I went into the lower gears. So I was stuck. I shut it off and had a smoke and got my pick up ready to tow the Mounty in the drive. I started it agian for one last try after 5 mins or so and I had reverse and drive back.

I parked it and got underneith to check the fluid and here I am today.

When I was under it, and with the engine running, I could hear the Whine noise and what sounded to me like bubbling? or maybe Cavatating coming from the pan. I dont know. it was a different noise.

So the guidence I am looking for is this: Is this a problem you guys that have replaced the Solinoid pack had? I can do that job, but I dont want to if that isnt the issue. I understand that no one really knows what the deal is by reading my story on the fourm, but if someone out there has had this issue and had it repaired, I would appreceiate some advice telling me where to start looking.

Thanks in advance.

Doug
