Hello all.. my name is George.. retired US Marine... disabled... 46 married 5 kids 2 grandkids... I need some help from you very good people...
Issue... I changed the oil on our 04 Explorer 4.0l SOHC movie after starting the engine after said will change we have a gnarly rattle coming from the upper front driver side head everywhere I looked said it could be or is a timing chain tensioner I change the tensioner 3 times to no avail it doesn't make the sound when the car is cold only after it warms up it is the same rattle that everyone else is hearing I have changed everything that I could now have the valve cover off and I'm looking at the guide and it looks alright I would be greatly appreciated for any help

Thank you for your service. Try using a stethoscope to find where the sound is coming from.

It's coming from the upper tensioner and guide ... tensioner is new.. changed the oil pressure reduction valve plastic tube... I did notice that when I changed the tensioner there was no pressure on the way in.. the old one sprung out when the last of the threads release.. the guides look intact during engine rotation... and your very welcome.. I'd still be in if it weren't for my disability... even knowing what I know now I'd still join in a heartbeat

The threads on the hole for the tensioner bolt on my head was stripped so the timing chain had enough tension to push the tenstioner out a little bit. Ended up having to replace the head and timing chains. I would suggest making sure the threads are clean and that the oil holes are lined up between the head and the tensioner when you put it in.
