I have a 2004 XLT Explorer....

Often I will leave certain valuables (phone, Ipod, watch, sometimes my keys) in the car as I don't want to carry them on my person when I exit the truck... I was trying to think of a unique place to store valuables in the car...

What I wanted to know, is, what lies directly beneath the center console tray?
Is it hollow? Is this even feasible?

Essentially, I was contemplating adding a small depressed compartment underneath the removeable black center console mat... No more then 2 inches deep, and 3" long/ 3" wide....

There is some room down there but the compartment would need to be a bit of an odd shape. Basically down the center of the console is an air duct for the rear seat vents. There is a small space to the right of this air duct where I currently tuck some audio wire and other connectors. You should just pop your center console out and take a look at whats in there. Take the screw out under the rubber mat and then just yank up on the rear portion of that piece of console (near the cigarette lighter port). Once the back pops loose you will have to unhook the wire to the cig lighter and then you can just lift the whole console out.
