Until 01 the only transmission option available on an SOHC is the 5r55e. I can't say for later years but unless a custom conversion has been done that was the only transmission offered on the SOHC in a second gen either 2wd or 4x4 configuration.

The SOHC was available in 1997, but only with the automatic. It was only offered with the manual in 2001-2003.

Just an update on my build... I now own one of those non production 2wd SOHC explorer's with a 5 speed swap.
I finished my conversion about 2 weeks ago with no hang ups at all. It's unbelievable how much faster it I s with the stick!
