I'm not mechanically inclined but a diligent reader and occasional poster here. My vehicle is 1997 Explorer 5.0 AWD 90k. Skipping the issues but my mechanic told me he was going to replace steering column bushings. I get the car back and if I have the door open with key in I get a warning tone - ok... If I remove the key with door still open I still get the warning tone - now I don't know if that is Ok or not Ok. I know I didn't used to get any warnings unless key was in ignition. So the behavior is definitely different and I think wrong but I' not sure... Lastly, assuming this new behavior is wrong, what could they have done when they had the steering column open and down?
thanks.

Been debating whether to keep this and invest some money or move on. Being 23 years old and in northeast it has underbody rust... On lift definitely rust - mechanic thought shocks and replace leaf spring shackles in back. On the lift we saw likely a rear main seal leak but not a downpour and one front axle seal also leaking. Mechanic suggests not investing much money and looking for something else...

A year ago I brought it to a mechanic in PA a year ago and he was afraid to lift it due to frame rust. I had to tell PA mechanic that my NYC mechanic has never hesitated and obviously never had a issue lifting it so PA guy did lift it with no issues.

thanks in advance

Minor issue. There is a wire that attaches to the key cylinder. If you put your key in, it completes the circuit, and beeps if the door is open so you don't lock the door with your key inside. If you don't put it back right, it is "always on" and it thinks there is a key in there.

You could pull out the cylinder (I THINK) you could check the wire from there. To pull out the cylinder, you need to put it in run and stick a long nail into a hole under the cylinder (thru the plastic). It has to come out anyway if you do any column work.

Should take him 10 min max to fix this, unless he cut the wire, even then it probably could be repaired.

"mechanic told me he was going to replace steering column bushings"..... so he charged you an arm and a leg to "replace steering column bushings"..???
That is NOT the issue on why our shift indicators are off....it's a simple ADJUSTMENT on a thumb wheel under kick plate !
How much did he charge you??
