HELP: No Engine Braking In 1st Gear

Hey guys,

So for some reason I have no engine braking in 1st gear. It's been this way for some time, but I've been extremely busy and all. During acceleration in 1st, the RPMs go up as they should, but when i take my foot off the gas there's no engine braking whatsoever. The truck runs fine and I have no problems other than this. Any ideas? Thanks a bunch.

Do you mean manual first? Drive 1st or Overdrive 1st?

No engine braking is usually a bad sign. It could mean mechanical failure of the one way rear sprag. That would require a rebuild. Have you dropped the pan, and inspected it for any signs of metal shavings, or any other broken metal fragments? A neutral drop is known to cause this rear sprag to explode.

sorry, its the 5speed auto. i don't plan on dropping the pan. i'm not inclined enough to do it. i was considering getting a new truck by the end of the year, lol. this is just a pain in the B@11$. thanks guys.

I previously inquired and am still interested to know if you have engine braking in D, in OD and in manual 1st. Do you have OD working ok?

The OD disable button will affect engine braking in 1st if you are driving it in OD with the OD disabled.Engine braking is supplied by the front or as FORD calls it, COAST CLUTCH.
