Down the beach yesterday and decided we had gone far enough and the sand was getting super soft, i reversed up about 10 metres in my tracks and the myx wouldn't move.... i can rev and run the engine perfect but it doesn't turn my wheels..... what can this be, my whole car is in neutral...... no park brake or gears....

Help help help

Did you check the transmission fluid level?

yep it has exactly the right amount......
This is not cool....

It sound like your tranny crapped out then. What sounds do you hear from it?

Is it just idling there, with no sound at all?

Do Australian Explorers have a manual(lever activated) or electronic(switch activated) transfer case?

I heard no noises at all and still don't from the tranny it sounds fine i can rev it etc when i go to put it into park it does whirr abit like when you don't put your foot down on a clutch in a manual car. I don't think any mods where made to the car except for the side of the steering wheel when they were sold to the aussie market

could this be the torque converter???

If it is whirring, it might be....I am not a tranny expert, but it looks like it will have to go to a shop:(

I asked about the transfer case to see if it didnt' get shifted into neutral by mistake. Only the manual ones have that setting though.

no gears

when u said" all neutral" are you saying that when you shift it wont catch the gears ? because i have the same problem. me and my brother went muddin a few weeks ago , and it had not been catching the gear. after i reved it up around 3000 rpm's it would catch the gear and it would go normal until the next time i would stop. but a few days ago it started leaking tranny fluid and now it wont even move. weve tried but theres no luck. do you how much a used tranny would cost ? hope u have some luck with yours because im surely not. bye

Sounds like either your torque converter is shot, something in the shift linkage/shift system, or in the valve bodies in the tranny. Sorry, but it probably needs a rebuild.

Of course, you may get lucky and it may be something simple.

linkages seem to be ok, i too thought it could be the torque converter but would the torque converter also allow the park break to be in neutral (what i understand about T/c's is they don't activeate the park break)!!!!!

I am about 95% certain that it is related to your transfer case, probably the transfer case shift solenoid. When I removed my solenoid a few years ago and didn't get the worm gear lined up just correctly when I put it back together, it did the same thing as yours after I spent many miles of driving in Low. The Control Trac transfer case has a neutral position that isn't utilized unless you get the neutral towing kit installed. If the shift solenoid gets hung up it can get stuck partially in the neutral position. When this happens you will get a loud "whirling" type shound in Park and it will act like you are stuck in neutral. A possible fix is to disconnect the battery for several minutes. When you do, it will force the shift solenoid to "re-home" itself. If the worm gear isn't jammed it might go back to the position it should be in. If it is jammed then you will have to have it towed and the transfer case inspected.
