I am a new member and own a 2000 Ford, Eddie Bauer Explorer. It only has 39,000 miles on it and looks like new. I am in the process of looking at replacing the lower ball joints on it. With only 39,000 miles the last service the mechanic says the lower ball joints should be replaced. I was quoted $450. I do a lot of my own mechanical work and have most all the tools needed but have never changed ball joints. I see Harbor Freight has a 3-IN-1 BALL JOINT/U-JOINT/C-FRAME PRESS SERVICE KIT for $39.95. Does anyone know if this would do the job in removing and installing the lower ball joints? It does not look like a big job if you have the tools. I would appreciate any help or suggestions. This Explorer is in perfect condition and I try to keep it this way. I had one front rotor grooved a little so I have just ordered a set of front rotors and pads which I am going to replace. I just had all fluids changed plus a new radiator, which was a surprise to have leaking. I would like to change the ball joints before they get bad and start my tires to wear. If anyone has any pictures of the procedures of replacing them please email them to me. jerrym@iowatelecom.net. Any information would help.
