88 ford bronco II 2.9L
ok i just got myself a 88 bronco II 2.9L, just dump grand in it, to take care of oil seal trans seal, oil pan and trans pan gasket with trans filter replace, exhaust and head gasket replace as well. just put some wire and sparkplugs in.. ok im gonna stop here and tell you before all that my truck ran but when it got warm and hot in the engine and while driving it would start to putter and lose it's power, causing it to stall. when i was on the highway it would die unless i press the gas pedal down then it would race and then do it again while pressing the gas then catch itself and drive. if i dont press the gas pedal down all the way it will dies. plus when it was sputtering while im driving and pressing the gas, i would see white smoke come out the back..... i need some idea before i throw more money in please help...

the first thing is with white smoke coming out the exhaust you want to test compression to see if you have a blown headgasket, all your cylinders should have fairly equal compression to with 10lbs of each other. if that checks out then you want to check the ignition control module on the back of the distributor, im not sure but I think they were around 20-30 bucks when I had my 2.9l still in my bdos. Ive heard guys say they get a stalling problem from the o2 sensor being bad, so that may be something to check as well. I had a very similar problem to the one your having minus the smoke and I just ended up putting a 4.0 in there. when I was was pulling it out I found that the o2 sensor wires were melted to the exhaust so that may have been causing my problem. the ignition module on the back of the distributor is a problem child in and of itself, I bought a heatsink from a tbird and ran my module to the firewall so it could get better cooling, that little beastie is very sensitive to heat and unfortunatley its placed in the hottest part of your engine bay. good luck I hope you can get it running right.

thnaks j, i will start with my compression first and then the next step
