2007 Ford sports trac
I took my 2007 sports trac to the shop today for a leaking rear main. The mechanic called later and showed me the flywheel which had some teeth with a slight grind on them. He suggested replacing it with another he had which he said was the same flywheel. On the way home, I drove it about 30 miles and have several concerns. In the dash, there was a engine block and small wrench icon on. The speedometer, trip meter and other information did not appear as it had. It also showed low fuel although it was full of gas. Additionally, the tranny did not shift as before with a longer time needed to shift. It also seems that when I took my foot off the petal, it slowed sharply. The engine is the 4.0 and had no kick and did not have the power compared to before. Does anyone think the flywheel could be the source of the power issue? Another oil leak was present but do not think it is the rear main. Earlier the upper and lower seals were replaced. I would appreciate any thoughts any of you may help that I can discuss with the mechanic tomorrow. JohnB

You sure you got the same truck back?

I think you listed about 10 problems...

A rear main seal is probably a 6.5
- 7 hour job on a 4x4 explorer... I surprised you got it done in one day.

For what it’s worth on the trans shifting issue, it sounds like they forgot to check the trans fluid when they were done.

And they forgot to plug in your speed sensor in the transfer case.

FYI, next time you pay $800-$1000 for work and have that many problems, turn right around and go right back.

Your suggestion is right on and having it back tomorrow early. Was also going to ask about the linkage and see what he did there. Thanks for the tip on the fluid. It was a 7 hour job and expensive. Thanks again.

Got the truck in. Mechanic agreed that he must have pinched the seal placing it as this was the leak in question. Repairing without cost. The tranny will be programed again to help with the sluggest problem. May take into next week to get it right but will keep all posted on the results.
