HELP! Rear brakes make a nasty noise on during first couple stops. Then everything is quiet the rest of the time.

This is an old 1993 EX that doesn't get driven much(1500 miles last yr). I had the front pads done last year.

Anyways, the rear drum brakes are making a grinding, squealing noise when i stop the truck the first couple of times after start up.

Is this rust built up or what? what should I do about it?

Any insight would be helpful before I take a hard look at it.

Cheers!

Probably just rust. Rotors tend to build a little bit of surface rust after sitting for a while, especially when it's moist out.

Thanks for the replies.

I guess I'll crack open the drum and clean it out with brake cleaner.

Let you know how it goes.

Mine did that when I had to let it sit for a month or more in the winter here and ya all I ever found was rust on the drum. Cleaning then may help short term if you’re driving it more not but let it sit and you may get the same thing again. some drums do it more then others the ones I have from AutoZone did it the most the ones I have no have never done it and they also sit for long periods of time so go figure.

Well I used the truck for a week or so and the noise is gone. So highly likely that it was rust built up from non use.

Cheers.:chug:
