Ok Here is the deal. I have a '99 Explorer with a 4.0 SOHC with 80,000. This thing is the car from hell. Every other week something new is broken. If you can think of it has been replaced.
-Entire top half of motor replaced-78,523
-The valve body of the tranny replaced-74,655
-Every sensor under the hood replaced-various miles.
-New front end, everything was worn out, I am talking new everything-72,000
-Exhaust system replaced
-Basically everything that can break has been replaced. I have ESP and the last time I was in I was told by my service advisor. That I have already claimed over $8500 worth of repairs and the Ford Motor Co. Is considering buying my car back. Not something I like because I love the car and it has already almost paid for itself in repairs!
The whole thing revolves around an idling and stalling problem. No matter what they do the car still idles and runs horrible. This is what happens. I start the car in the morning and everything is fine. Back out start my drive. Every day I come to a stop light that is on slight hill. My car starts to roll back a little and I give it some gas and the car stalls- It does it under all conditions dry, wet, hot, cold everything. Then after that for the rest of the day the car makes this nasty vibrating/surging noise but will not stall. Believe me I have tried everything to get it to stall twice in one day, it wont. I dont think its the engine cause the RPM gauge does not move when it is making this noise it just makes the noise. You can feel it in the car through the floor boards. Anyone got any ideas???? Please help I dont want those fools at the FMCo to take my car!!

Could be a problem with the Torque Converter - does the problem resemble what happens if you leave a manual tranny in too high a gear at too slow a speed?

Oh man...I'm sorry you had to go through this. You need to tell Ford to buy you another Explorer Limited.

Could the stalling is because of IAC??

Thanks for the tips! I have mentioned to the mechanics before that it could be the torque convertor but they just blew me off, like I was stupid. As for the IAC they have replaced that twice. The first time they put one in and it was defective so i they had a to put another one in. So that is new I think that they just replaced that 2 weeks ago. Maybe I will mention the torque convertor to them the next time that I go in. I have weekly appointments with them it seems. The best part is it all FREE! If anyone else can think of something else that it might be please let me know. My warranty coverage expires in like 6mos and at the rate things are going i think that they are never going to figure it out, or maybe they just dont want to! ($$$$$$ when the car was new the warranty only cost $2000 and i have used that four times over. ) Thanks for your help!

Well an update on my car, shes dead as a doornail. The tow truck is loading her up right now. Got in it this morning to start it up and it started making a nasty grinding, shuddering, basically not good noise and then the truck lunged foward about four times when i put it into gear, the motor tried as long as it could to keep going but then it died. Wont start again, off the Ford Garage she goes.

Flywheel blow up possibly?

I hate when people don't follow up! It's like the last chapter of a book is ripped out!
