I have a 92 4x4 and recently the 4wd has quit workin. I have a feeling its in the dash button. The 4 low button would come on eratically for the past few years but 4 hi always worked. Last time it snowed i noticed that 4 hi didn't engage either. And now both the buttons seem to light erratically. Not fully lit just dimly, sometiems hittng the dash makes them blink. So i have a felling its somethin in the buttons. Also i don't hear a click in the rear and the 4x4 dash light doesnt' come on, i dont think its the control box because i replaced it this summer, (removed the wrong pannel tryin to find the factory amp). All was workin well before i went off to school, checked the hubs, u joints, tcase all worked fine.

Secondly, i have tried removing the dash pannel to check the switch, but can't seem to get it all the way off, the headlight knob keeps getin in my way and i can't remove it, any suggestions? Also is there a fuse that i should check? Cuz i have recently been having several dash light problems, High beams work, but the little blue light doenst' come on, My temp gauge has been jumpin around, no way my thermostat is openin and closing that fast, (new this summer). SO im wondering if there is some connection. ANy help is appreciated.

And no selling my Xploder is not an option. :-p

I would check the connection behind the switch in the dash. I think but im not sure but i think there is alittle nut that you have to unscrew to get the headlight knob off. You dont really need to pull the entire front dash panel to get to the switch. Also you may wana just go through and check the fuses. There should be a guide telling you whats what on the fuse cover. As for the temp quage they are just wacky. Just about every explorer I have been in it jumps around all the time. Hope this helps some.

the dash panel should pop right off it's just a matter of manuveuring it around the column and the switch at the same time. you shouldn't have to remove the headlight switch, in mine i don't.

Two screws hold the ash-tray in, dash bezel pulls of as stated above.. And of course the wire harness behind the 4x4 switch... I usually put it 1st gear to get the handle out of the way

EDIT - You may or may not have to screw around with the stereo to get the bezel off, I have to with mine..
