I have a problem. My 94 ford explorer starts up find but sometimes I have to pat the gas petal for the first min before it will stay running on it's own. Could this be that my Catlic Converter is bad or could the fuel pump be going bad.

If it is one of these components how can I test them to find out which one is bad.

How many miles are on it? It might need a tune up. Plugs, wires, fuel filter.

Could be the Idle Air Control Valve. Does it ever make a whooooooo whining buzzing sound when it coasts/idles? If so it's definately the IAC

pray its not your fuel pump because it costed $580(with towing) to get mine fixed. i had to pat on the gas a little to get it started then it just died and never started again. when i through mine into gear it sounded like it wanted to stall out and when i pushed on the gas you would feel it want to die out.

good luck

Clean your MAF, seriously, I wouldn't be surprised if your car acted fine after that because mine was doing the same thing. It'll take you 10 leisurely minutes of work for great results.
