Thanks in advance. I recently purchased a 2004 Explorer with a strange problem; I didn't notice it when I test drove the truck because the problem only happens after 30 mins + of highway driving.
The first time I felt it I thought it was noise from going over raised seams on the the highway. It is a rhythmic "clunk" sound/sensation that happens only above 30 mph and ONLY when I take my foot off the gas and the vehicle coasts. As soon as I give it some gas the problem disappears and then returns when I take my foot off the gas again. The clunk feels like it comes from deep within and towards the front; it is rhythmic and for the the first couple of weeks seemed to happen at the same frequency regardless of the driving speed. It has gotten even more noticeable (alarming) and now does seem to get a little faster with increased driving speed. The transmission shifts perfectly fine and smoothly into and out of all gears.

I searched on this forum and there are a few references to a possible reason due to mismatched tires or tread patterns; the computer will sense it and try to compensate(?). When I bought the truck I didn't pay particular attention to the tires since I planned on replacing them soon due to the fact that they appeared pretty well worn. So, last night I went out and took a closer look and sure enough they are mismatched. I just ordered a set and will see if that fixes things. I welcome any other thoughts and suggestions. Thanks very much.

Thank you!
